Cheese Straws

Cheats Cheese Straws Baby Led Weaning Recipes from peanutdiaries.com

Ingredients

  • 1/12 pack of puff pastry [store bought]
  • Hard goats cheese
  • Basil [fresh or from a squeezy tube]
  • Black pepper
  • flour for dusting the surface

Prep time:

Directions

  1. Heat the oven according to the instructions on the puff pastry pack [roughly 200]
  2. Sprinkle some flour on your worktop and roll out the puff pastry [I lost my rolling pin, so used a pestle, a wine bottle will also do]
  3. Grate on a little bit of goats cheese, add some basil and some black pepper [think sprinkle]
  4. Fold over and roll and repeat a couple of times
  5. Cut into fingers and place on baking tray and sprinkle a final dusting of goats cheese
  6. Bake, let cool and enjoy

When I was pregnant and on a contract in an office, I overheard a mum talking about the ‘Cheese Straw Wars’ at her little girl’s nursery – apparently some mums were very precious about their cheese straw making abilities, one mum had even moaned about another mum who apparently used store bought puff pastry and had the nerve to “just grate cheese over the store bought pastry and pop in the oven”.

I checked the salt levels in store bought puff pastry and found that it was suitable for baby led weaning [0.2g sodium/100g] – I also get 12 portions out of a 500g pack [which I cut up and freeze]. So with that in mind, I decided to make some cheese straws, with the words about store bought puff pastry ringing in my ears, I decided to put a little more effort in, so googled a suitable puff pastry recipe and memorised it just incase anyone asked…
